2013 PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

 BRACKET RACING NEWS

Welcome to the unofficial (but pretty much official) Portland International Raceway Bracket Racing site!

The focus of this site will remain as it has been for the past thirteen years – as a source to keep you updated on the Bracket Racing program at PIR. I'll leave the street legal races, import races, etc. up to someone else.  While this remains a volunteer deal, as with all previous seasons, I’ll do my best to post the race results and current point standings within 24 hours of receiving them.  I will also continue to submit the weekly race results to National Dragster.

If you have any information, news, comments or concerns regarding Bracket Racing at Portland International Raceway that you would like to have posted here, just send an e-mail to:

Greg Rollin

(greg@supercarsunlimited.com)

Sorry about all the messed up links toward the bottom of this page – I have no idea what happened or caused the issue.  I’ll work on correcting it all as I have time.  What a mess…..

Shhhhhh…..   Don’t tell Lettie, but Dawn Detrich and Vicki Comeau have come up with a way

to thank Lettie for all of her hard work and dedication to Team PIR.  This Sunday at the

awards banquet, they will present her with a sterling silver “Wally” necklace, a gift card

and a box of candy.  If you would like to help contribute toward these gifts for our

hard working team captain, please see the Dietrich’s or Comeau’s at the banquet.

NOVEMBER 25, 2013

Kyle Comeau Toy and Canned Food Drive

As you all know he was and will always be considered a child at heart the boy who never wanted to age or "grow up" so it only seems appropriate that we run a toy drive for local kids in need in his name, seeing as even up till his death you had to up your back into prying him away from his Legos..   The donations are any unwrapped new toy OR canned food. I spoke directly to the chair of this foundation, this year they are providing toys and Christmas dinner for 700 FAMILIES!  Lets show them the spirit of Christmas like Kyle would, after all it was one of his favorite days!

Those wishing to donate can bring them to the PIR banquet or

(until Dec. 11) directly to the Comeau “compound”.

NOVEMBER 4, 2013

The 2013 PIR awards banquet will be held on Sunday December 8th at the Portland Airport Shilo Inn.

Click HERE for a reservation form (pdf format).  If you need it in a different format (Word, etc.), just let

me know.  Please note the reservation deadline is November 28.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2013

Now that I’ve got most of that Spokane dirt and dust cleaned out of my car and equipment, let me just take a moment to say that even though Team PIR ended up finishing lower than we had all hoped we would, I’m proud of all my teammates for giving it their all!  We’ll get ‘em next year at Woodburn.   Speaking of Woodburn, congrats to Dave Sattem for winning the Super Pro final on Sunday and to Jerry Durant, Jr. for his win in Sportsman!  And speaking of other teams, as always, it was nice to see and talk with so many of the friends I’ve made over the years at the Finals.   And along those lines, perhaps my favorite aspect of the whole team race is the camaraderie between Team PIR racers, their family and friends.  It was nice chatting with so many of you as well!   While we did have a bit of a scare on Sunday, I’m happy to report Phil Lang is (for the most part) okay after a top end accident on his bike.  Glad you’re okay, Phil.  If anybody has a race report or anything they would like me to post regarding the Team Race / Division Finals, just let me know.

AUGUST 27, 2013

any questions for Tony, his cell number is 503-939-5108.

AUGUST 20, 2013

This weeks Booster Club message:

This weeks Winner bonus payout sponsors (yep 2 this week!!) are:
               Tabor Automotive, Richard Tabor, owner
                               and
D & E Auto Care, Dean DeGrande, owner

Don't forget the Team Meeting after the race this week.  We are still
selling tickets for the 3rd Baxter Auto Parts $50 gift card.  The raffle
is to be drawn in the next couple of weeks.
This weeks bonus tickets phase is:  Race Of Champions

AUGUST 8, 2013

Couple of things.  First and foremost, some good news!  The points

adjustment / throw away race will NOT be a part of the 2014 points system!

There will also likely be some tweaks made to the bogey / #1 qualifier system

for next season as well.  More on that later.   Along the lines of #1qualifiers,

I have added that info to the Jr. Dragster weekly results – my apologies for not

including that info earlier in the season.

The official Team Race competitor info is posted on the Division 6 website – in

Word format.  For those without Word, I have converted the file to a pdf format.

Click here for the file.  Don’t forget there is a Team Race meeting next

Wednesday night.

AUGUST 7, 2013

Update from the Booster Club:

There will be sign-up sheets in the tower for the Team dinner at the
Team Race.  Please go to the 2nd floor of the tower and sign-up on what
you can bring, coolers, tables, salad, etc.

AUGUST 6, 2013

This week’s message from Ken Green

and the Booster Club:

This weeks winner sponsor is Dietrich Trucking, owner Richard & Dawn
Dietrich.  NWDRA will still sponsor the runner-up.
The 3rd Baxter Auto Parts $50 Gift card we will start raffling this
week.  The drawing will be later this season, after points are over.
This week it would be good to know one of the traction compounds that are
used on the track.  There are a couple of different names, although one
has not been made for several years.  Any of the names, former or
current, will get the bonus tickets.

Just to clarify a few things, points end August 14th for ALL classes (including Jr.).

Juniors DO race on the 14th.  When I posted the schedule at the beginning of the year,

I went by the info on the official schedule (which is posted here in pdf format in the

schedule section) which may not have been clear regarding the points ending date

for Juniors.  My apologies for any confusion.

If you have any questions regarding the weekly Booster Club message posted here,

please see Ken Green.  With the exception of adding the links, everything in the

white box is always a copy and paste from what Ken sends me – I don’t write it.

And lastly for now, the points adjustment has been made.  As you may have gathered, I’m

not a supporter of the points adjustment “throw away” race concept.  In my opinion it

penalizes those of us who are loyal PIR racers who make the effort to show up every week.

And that just doesn’t seem right.  If you would like to see the adjustment dropped next

season, please let Pete know your thoughts.

JULY 30, 2013

From Ken Green and the Booster Club:

This weeks Winner Bonus Payout sponsor is A+ Bail Bonds, Owner Tom Loos.
More sponsors are needed for the winner Bonus Payout.  If you know a

round of eliminations.  Everyone interested in racing for the team needs
to attend.

This is the last week of selling raffle tickets for the 2nd

Wednesday, so do not forget to buy tickets.  If you do not have any tickets,
you have no chance of winning!!!

required before you race, and knowing you complete a Tech Card will get
you your extra raffle tickets.

very shortly, so be listening for it.

Blast from the past (1978) - the good old days of match racing nitro cars.

JULY 16, 2013

Just a reminder to be sure to fill out all information on your tech card.  While I don’t post vehicle

info here, it is part of the information I can post when submitting our results to National Dragster.

So unless you want me to list your vehicle as a 1976 Pacer or a 1954 Hudson, or a Yugo, it might

be a good idea to fill out your tech card…….

From the Booster Club:

This weeks winner bonus payout sponsor is A+ Bail Bonds, operator Tom
Loos.  NWDRA will again sponsor the runner-up bonus payout.
Do not forget to purchase raffle tickets for the 2nd Baxter Auto Parts
$50 gift card.  They are only a $1 each!!
This week we hope no one has any transmission problems.  If you have
transmission problems, then you will not be around to receive your extra
50-50 tickets.  If you do not have transmission problems, then you just
need to let the Booster Club know you don't have any.

And just a reminder to our weekly sponsors – if your company has a website,

please let me know the site’s address, and I’ll gladly post a link to it.

JULY 9, 2013

From the Booster Club:

Lettie would like to extend a personal apology to last week's double
winner sponsors for the National Dragster Challenge.  They were:
Buds Auto Wrecking, owner Brian Overturf
Dietrich Trucking, owner Richard & Dawn Dietrich
The above sponsors allowed a double, extra payout for the winner of each
class.  North West Drag Racing Association (NWDRA) continues to sponsor
the extra payout for the runner-up in each category.
This weeks extra winner sponsor is:
ISSPRO Inc., arranged by Mike Pliska who works there.
Cliff Waldron was the winner last week of the 1st Baxter Auto Parts $50
Gift Card raffle.  This week we start a new raffle for the second Gift
Card.  The drawing for this $50 Baxter Gift Card is scheduled for the
end of July.  We will hold another raffle in August for the 3rd Baxter
$50 Gift Card.
Be sure and get your friends to come out and race at PIR, this will
increase the CAR COUNT, and with a larger CAR COUNT, the track payout is
larger.  Also, knowing we want to increase the CAR COUNT will get your
extra raffle tickets.

Hard to believe we’re talking team race already, but it will be here before we know it, so

best start making your plans now.

The Team Hotel for the Spokane Summit Finals over Labor Day has been
arranged for.  It is only about 2.5 miles from the track and has a 24

determine the details on the hotel, cost and phone number, contact
Lettie, either call her or track her down at the track.

Remember, this is a points race:

JUNE 20, 2013

Since we were only able to get in the first time run in Sportsman before the rain set in,

last night’s race is considered a “full” rain out.  Meaning those who braved the rain and

came out will not be required to purchase another tech card next week.  It also means

no points will be given for the purchase of last night’s tech cards.

JUNE 18, 2013

This week’s Booster Club message:

This week's winner sponsor will be S & J Automotive, owned by Scott and
Frank Pettit.
If you would like to be a winning sponsor, more sponsors are needed so
contact Lettie.
A reminder, all the money raised by the Booster Club goes back to the
racers as banquet door prizes, the end of season picnic and as the entry
fee at the Division 6 Team Race Finals.  Each Racer still must join the
NHRA and pay the membership fee.  Remember the phrase NHRA Membership
Fee if you want the extra tickets.
Also, the Booster Club will be raffling a $50 Baxter Auto Parts gift card.
We will sell tickets for 3 racing weeks before drawing, so you will need

APRIL 24, 2013

This week’s 50-50 word(s): “Practice Tree”.

APRIL 15, 2013

From the Booster Club comes this week’s word: “Waterbox”.

APRIL 12, 2013

If ever there was urgent and pressing news, this is it.  I have located and reposted

the missing race results from the 2007 season!

APRIL 9, 2013

Thanks to Carol Brown for the two memorials of Kyle.

From the booster club comes this week’s word(s) “Perfect Light”.

APRIL 5, 2013

I’m sure many of you are probably aware by now, but if you have not heard, it is with a

heavy heart that I must pass along the news that Kyle Comeau passed away last week.

As has always been my feelings on these matters, I felt it was best to hold off on posting

anything here until I had the consent of the family.  Vicki would like the following passed

along to the PIR racing community:

The memorial will be held for Kyle on April 13th at 10:30AM at Crossroads Community Church (7708 NE 78th St Vancouver, WA 98662). Please spread the word, and our request for bright clothing and/or dress as your favorite superhero or star wars character. Thank you.

I’ll pass along any further updates as I receive them.

MARCH 27, 2013

The finalized 2013 points and rules info can now be found in the Info section – including

a printable version.

MARCH 26, 2013

Back for 2013, the Booster Club will again be offering bonuses for the 50-50 drawing

for knowing the weekly “secret word”.  This week’s word is “Bogey”.  As with

previous years, you are encouraged to use the word in a sentence when purchasing

your 50-50 ticket(s).  In the event of a rain out, the word will be carried over to the

next race.

And just a reminder to completely fill out your tech card – including all vehicle information.

Although I don’t post vehicle info here with the results, it is part of the information I can add

when I submit our weekly results to National Dragster.   It’s up to you - if the info isn’t on

your card, I can’t post it!

MARCH 23, 2013

Please note there have been a few changes to the points system for 2013.

Some little tweaks here and there, but probably the most significant is the

new for 2013 Bogey point(s).   I’ll update Info section next week, but I wanted

to get this out before tomorrow.   See the Info section of the site for updated

2013 rules and points information.

MARCH 21, 2013

The weather is looking good for the first points race coming up this Sunday!

MARCH 6, 2013

Just a reminder, weather permitting, there will be a Test & Tune this Sunday

(March 10th).  A second Test & Tune (also weather permitting) will be held

on Wednesday March 20th.  Entry fee for either date is $28.00, spectator $9.00.

The Booster Club will run a Cash Bash and a 50-50 on both dates, based on

turn-out and driver response.

About the only thing I dislike about doing this site is when I have to report news such

as I have today.  Long time PIR racer W.F. “Mac” MacRitchie has passed away.

A memorial service will be held for Mac at PIR on Sunday, February 24th at 1 PM in the

Rose Cup Room (next to the tower).  Mac's daughter, Lori, would love fellow racers bring their

race car or street car to the service, and have them rev their engines when the hearse leaves

as a final send off for Mac.

Thanks to Carol Brown for the picture compilation above.

Not much to report lately, so in the interest of posting something, for the fifth

time since it was installed in 1985, the bridge now has a new sponsor!

Happy New Year to everybody and welcome back to the PIR Bracket site for round 13!

One goal I have for the site this year is to update the Photos pages.

But this will require your help.  As always, as long as you are signed up for points,

please feel free to submit a picture and I’ll post it.   Carol Brown has always been

gracious in allowing the use of her pictures here – if you don’t see one on her site, check

with her as she very likely has one you can submit.  With any submission, please let me

know who the photographer was so I can give them credit.

Email them to the address at the top of this page.

Please note I cannot post copyrighted pictures.

Another area of the site in desperate need of an update is the Crew section.

As soon as our fearless leader gets me names and pictures of the 2013 crew,

I’ll post them.

As you may have noticed, the 2013 schedule is now posted.
