2008 PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

 BRACKET RACING NEWS

Welcome to the unofficial (but sort of official) Portland International Raceway Bracket Racing site! The focus of this site will remain as it has for the past eight years – as a source to keep you updated on the Bracket Racing program at PIR. I'll leave the street legal races, import races, etc. up to someone else.  While this remains a volunteer deal, as with all previous seasons I’ll do my best to keep the race results and current point standings posted within 24 hours of receiving them.  I will also continue to submit these results to National Dragster. As with the past couple of years, I will leave the picture pages up to you - the racers running for points at PIR to submit.

If you have any information, news, comments or concerns regarding Bracket Racing at Portland International Raceway that you would like to have posted here, just send an e-mail to:

DECEMBER 29, 2008

Congratulations to all 2008 PIR Track Champions! Thanks to Carol Brown for the pictures.

Jim Glenn – Super/Pro

Scott Lang – Pro

Justin Saxe – Sportsman

Van Smith – Motorcycle

Charlie Tiller – High School

Merranda Molinari – Jr. Dragster Lightning

Meghan Molinari – Jr. Dragster Thunder

Dan Bullis – Sport Compact

And finally for now, an update from Van Smith:

“……here’s an update such as it is, had a good time at the banquet and wanted to thank everybody for their good thoughts, well wishes and prayers. I am doing ok, but it is a slow process of sitting around and doing not much but just waiting to heal and knowing that I can't do much about it if it does not go right so we will see. The next three or four weeks will tell and there is still quite a bit of pain sometimes that has not changed in the last few weeks, hopefully that improves by the first of the year so I can get back to work. For the most part you wouldn't know I was hurt if you see me getting around just fine, never was much visible damage to me, just a lot of pain especially in the beginning.

Van”

NOVEMBER 17, 2008

While he wasn’t entered in our points program this year, Steve Kelly is a regular racer (and winner) at PIR. Although he raced for that track down south this year, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the fact that after his win at Pomona this past weekend, Steve is now the National Champion in Pro Bracket!

Congrats Steve!

King of The Track ladder and finals now posted in the Results section

OCTOBER 14, 2008

As some of you might already know, the 2008 PIR motorcycle track champion Van Smith was involved in an accident at Woodburn last Sunday.  I have learned from Mark Canty thru Carol Brown that Van is currently at Emanuel Hospital where he is being treated for a broken scapula and ribs.  Mark reports Van is in good spirits but is understandably in a lot of pain. For the sake of privacy, I won’t post Van’s address here, but if anybody would like to send him a card, send me an email and I will pass it along. I’ll post any updates here as I receive them.

King of The Track Results

After four weeks of racing for the King of The Track championship, the final round came down to two long time PIR racers Steve Laskowske and Paul Comeau.

In the end, it was Steve Laskowske who took home the Wally.  While this was not Steve’s first Wally, it was his first in the Chevelle. See the results section for details.

OCTOBER 8, 2008

King Of The Track finals tonight!  Sadly, tonight is also the final Wednesday night bracket race of the year (the remaining three Wed. nights are street legal format with possible cash bashes).

SEPTEMBER 19, 2008

Due to the rain delayed NW Open finals having to be run on the night the King Of The Track series was scheduled to start, the series will be shortened by that one race.  The remaining King of the Track race dates will continue as originally scheduled.

King Of The Track points are now listed in the RESULTS section.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2008

2008 Team Race pics are up!  Check them out at Carol Brown’s site.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2008

Almost….  Congrats to Jim Glenn (S/Pro) and Merranda Molinari (Jr. Lightning) for their final round appearances in Saturday’s Race of Champions.  While of course wins would have been nice, second place in the entire Division is not a bad place to be!  Congrats also go to Paul Comeau for his runner up finish in Pro on Sunday!  A thumbs up to Tony Schroeder for receiving Best Appearing Car in S/Pro, and of course congrats to the entire Team Portland for a third place overall finish!  I’ll post some further details later….

KING OF THE TRACK IMPORTANT UPDATE

Due to the rain-postponed NW Open on 8-24, the ET classes from that event are scheduled to run this Wednesday night (9-3).  This means the King Of The Track Series that was originally scheduled for Sept. 3, will begin NEXT Wednesday night (Sept. 10).

AUGUST 28, 2008

Best wishes to all Team Portland racers in Boise!

As soon as I receive any race reports, I’ll post ‘em here……..

AUGUST 27, 2008

As promised, here are a few of my random pics from the NW Open.

This B/SA 71 Chevelle was one of my favorites.

For the first time in quite a few years, Holly Gaynor returned to racing at PIR.

She qualified number one in Stock / Super Stock Combo on Saturday.

Holly’s son Tommy was Saturday’s winner in Stock / Super Stock.

Rod Lee made his return to racing at PIR worthwhile by winning

Super Gas on Saturday.

Wednesday night Super Pro racer Dan Cyr was running his cool wheel standing

A/SA ‘69 Camaro.

Another cool A/SA ’69 Camaro was that of Craig Bloom.

Steve Laskowske was racing his new dragster in Top Comp as well as his

Corvette in Super Gas.

Another of my favorites was Rod Souza’s cool ’57 Chevy roadster.

AUGUST 25, 2008

NW NATIONAL OPEN RESULTS

(Local boys do well!)

It was nice to see so many fast cars in the Portland pits again!  It was also nice to see so many old friends back racing at PIR – hopefully many will return next season to compete in the Wednesday night Brackets.

Results from Saturday’s races are posted below. The picture directly below pretty much sums up Sunday’s eliminations. Most categories made it to the semi-finals before the rain put an end to the races for the day. While the payout was divided up among the remaining competitors, the race for the Wally will be as follows.  For Top Comp, Stock/SuperStock Combo, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street the finals will be held in Medford during the Lucas Oil race on Sept. 26, 27.  The finals in Super/Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle, Jr. Thunder and Jr. Lightning will be held at PIR on Wednesday Sept. 3rd (the usual Wednesday night 103db noise limit apples).

May 6, 2008

Please note there have been a couple of revisions made to the schedule – most notably the points ending date for all categories has been changed from August 20th to August 13th.

Due to the Champ Car race no longer on the 2008 PIR schedule – but still with some possible conflicts with the Star Mazda race now in its place, at this point, Wednesday July 23rd remains a tentative bracket racing night.  Check back here for details - I’ll post them as soon as they become available.  There have also been a few changes to the Jr Dragster race dates – as well as for High School and Sport Compact.  See the schedule page for full details.

April 8, 2008

Jr. Dragster Notice / Reminder

Due to the rainout of the first scheduled points race on March 26, the first Jr. Dragster points race has been rescheduled for Wed. April 9.  In the event that race is rained out, points will begin on the 16th and will follow the regular schedule from that point on.

March 18, 2008

Woo-Hoo!  The 2008 season has started!

Even though the new season has started, it’s not too late to let us know your 2008 plans……

Our latest  Racer Update comes from the Masterman camp.  John writes:

The Camaro is progressing nicely. As usual, it didn't seem like anything
would be necessary engine-wise. And once again, I was reminded of why I tear
it apart anyway. The top of one valve guide had broken off, and was rattling around on
the valve stem. Lovely. So, everything got freshened up. Heads freshened up and new
exhaust valves, block honed, new rings and bearings (insert plug for Paolo Engine
Service).  Oh, the cam was coming apart. New cam (insert plug for Oregon Cam Grinding).
It was finally time to give some love to the very abused transmission in the Camaro.
After better than eight years of abuse, it was finally time to replace some
internals: Second gear, third gear, both collars, both hubs, both forks, and all the bearings.
I really have to hand it to Chrysler for their design and durability on the A-833.
GM could only hope to have ever made something that could hold up to as
much abuse as this thing does. Life has been good since I ended up with a
drivetrain that matches up with a 60's hemi car.  A-833 tranny and Dana 60 rear.
Things don't break anymore (not counting spider gears, of course...)

JANUARY 14, 2008

Racer Update.  Carol Brown gives us this update on Bob’s plans for the 2008 season:

“Bob bought a 1970 RS Z28 Camaro project car from a guy he knows.  It had been in his
shop and he just didn't have time to finish it, so he asked Bob if he wanted to
buy it and finish it.  It has all or most of the parts, plus some extras.
It basically needs to be assembled, paint, plus it needs a motor and tranny, and all of that.
He was going to pull the motor and tranny out of the 1986 race car Camaro he
built last season, but he's checking with the pastor of our church to see if we have some
high schoolers who want to race it this season, so depending on if that happens, the motor
and tranny will stay in the race Camaro (the 1986) until the racing season is done, and
then get pulled out to go into the 1970 Camaro..”

JANUARY 10, 2008

Our next 2008 Racer Update comes from Mark Canty.

“Quick update for 2008 Wednesday Night Summit ET series
will still race my 2002 Yamaha FZ1trying to be the first one to go 5 years straight!

Friday night Street Bike ET Challenge Series
I have purchased a 2008 Kawasaki ZX 1400
Placed 2nd last year...looking to improve
The bike is bone stock so far.. less than 600 miles on it.
Planning on: Lowering It, Strapping the front end, Stretching it 6in,Air shifter, Shift light, Gearing, Race tires
Should run around 9.40 @148 mph or so
See ya at the races.”

JANUARY 9, 2008

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the 2007 PIR Awards Banquet, but thanks to Carol Brown, pictures are available at her web site!  Looks like a fun time was had by all – wish I could have been there…..

If you are looking for some great bargains to get your car ready for the 2008 season, you’ll be sure to want to check out the 32nd Annual N.W.D.R.A. Hi-Performance Swap Meet on the 20th.

For more information as well as a downloadable entry form, check out the N.W.D.R.A web site

After you’ve scored those bargains, be sure to send ME a Racer Update.  The first one of the year comes from John Masterman.  John reports the Buick has received a new narrower rear.  In addition to beefier preload springs to eliminate that pesky “One-tire-burnout-when-it-hits-a-dry-spot-in-the-burnout-box” problem, it should eliminate the tire rub problem when transporting all the racy stuff to and from the track.  As for the Camaro, John reports it is currently “Keeping a part of the street from getting hit directly with rainfall” – look for a Camaro update in a month or so…..

JANUARY 7, 2008

Happy New Year everybody!  We’re back for another round!

As always for this time of the year, this section welcomes all PIR points racers new season plans / updates (new car, class, engine update, new sponsors, etc., etc.).  Just send them to ME and I'll post it here in the News section. When submitting, please use the subject "Racer Update" and if possible, please try to keep the photo sizes under 300KB - and in jpeg format.

I'll have some more stuff to add here in the next few days and I'll post the 2008 schedule just as soon as I receive.
