PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY BRACKET RACING NEWS

January 11, 2003.

Welcome to the unofficial (but sort of official) PIR Bracket Racing web site! While it may not contain lots of glitter and graphics, my plan is as it was for the 2001/2002 seasons, to keep you updated on Portland's Bracket Racing program. With that being said, keep in mind, this is still a volunteer deal. But I will do my best to keep the results and points standings listings updated as often as possible. I will also try to update the racer pictures sections though out the season.

And as was the case for the last few seasons, the main focus of this site will remain the Bracket Racing (points) program at PIR. I'll leave the street legal races, import races, etc. up to someone else.

As for this sites goofy address, well it was free with my dialup account (hint-hint for above), and since I already have a web site for my business (shameless plug) www.supercarsunlimited.com, I thought I'd devote this one to all my fellow PIR Bracket Racers.

If you have any information, news, comments or concerns regarding Bracket Racing at PIR that you would like to have posted here, just send an e-mail to: Greg Rollin

(greg@supercarsunlimited.com)

December 29, 2003.

I'm (finally) getting hip!

A new one that is. Left side. Actually, it's been broken for several months now, but this Wednesday morning (New Years Eve.), I will be going in to the hospital for hip replacement surgery. This was brought on due to the amount of the drug Prednisone that I have had to take to help keep the Myasthenia Gravis under control. While Prednisone has been a miracle drug for me, it is not without its side affects. One of which is called Avascular Necrosis which is a deterioration of the bones. Hopefully, I'll be able to replace the Prednisone with another drug soon.......

One of the disadvantages of being in the hospital over New Years is that I'll miss Larry Pfisters always excellent annual Photo Spectacular at horsepowerheaven.com Be sure to check it out!

Let me wish each and every one of you a safe and Happy New Year. Hope to see you all in 2004. Greg.

The funeral for Larry will be Friday (Sept. 26th) at 10:00 am in Vancouver at Evergreen Memorial Garden (1101 Northeast 112th Avenue, Vancouver, WA 98684 360-892-6060). Thanks to Jack Hewitt for this update.

September 22, 2003.

I have some sad news to report. Long time PIR racer and Pontiac enthusiast Larry Schiffman passed away last Sunday. At this time, this is all the information I have. As soon as I hear more, I will post it here.

September 16, 2003.

History was made last Friday night as blown - alcohol injected funny cars and dragsters made passes down the PIR 1/4 mile for the first time since 1985. This was strictly a noise test to give the surrounding neighborhoods an idea of what to expect if this type of racing is to return to PIR. Participants included the 57 Chevy flopper of Bernie Rugg (above), Dave Germain's Dodge Stratus TAFC and the front engined dragsters of Gary Eickmann, Tyson Price and Jay Kiwnee. As I hear more on how the noise test went with the neighborhoods, I'll post it here. Look for further info to be posted in the History section as well.

Note for the King of the Track race this Wednesday (17th). Yes this is for a Wally. Rain date is the following Wednesday (24th) and through October if need be…….. There is also a separate Jr. Dragster race that will be getting an award. This race is being sponsored by the Woodburn Jr. Dragsters Booster Club and Savings Bonds.

September 10, 2003.

2003 Division 6 Team Race quick notes. Congratulations to the following Team PIR racers:

Race of Champions Winner in Jr. Dragster Thunder: Mike George.

Race of Champions Runner-Up in Super/Pro: Gary Ericksen.

ET Finals Winner in Super/Pro: Gary Hostetler.

September 8, 2003.

While we wait for the official report from the Team Race, I have some other really exciting news to report. Yes the rumors are true. For the first time since 1985, there will be supercharged, alcohol burning dragsters and/or funny cars at PIR!! In essence, this is a noise level test / demonstration for the surrounding neighborhoods. If all goes well, this could mean the return of the "big" drag race shows at our home track! The sound check will be held this Friday night (Sept. 12th) in conjunction with the G.I. Joes Late Night Drags. Gates open at 7:00 pm.

BE THERE!

 August 22, 2003.

The final 2003 points are posted in the Results section. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are tied in the top four positions in any of the categories, you will need to be at PIR on August 27th for tiebreaker runoffs (No pressure there, huh?).

Also, racers will need to get their team race shirts at PIR before going to Canada. Pete will have them next Wednesday (Aug. 27). This will give you two weeks to pick up your shirt before the Bracket Finals.

August 15, 2003.

Team race meeting Wednesday August 20th at PIR. If you are on the 2003 team, be there! I probably don't need to remind anyone that August 20th is also the last points race…….

August 7, 2003.

Picture pages note. Well, it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to do much with the Picture pages anytime soon. I was hoping I would be able to update / add to that section this year. But again, it's just not going to happen. And I'm not going to put this on Carol either. She spends LOTS of her time doing the 35mm shots as it is. So that wouldn't be fair. So what I'm going to ask, is that if you want a new / updated shot of your car (regular Wed. night PIR racers only), posted on this site, send it to me in a jpeg format (under 80k size) and I'll post it. Note: Please provide photographer name. So there you have it. I will gladly add your car to this site, but it's up to you to send me the pic!

July 31, 2003.

Team Race meeting next Wednesday night. If you are part of Team PIR 2003, and are going to Ashcroft, you will need to be in the bleachers next Wed. (Aug. 6) at 7:00 for important information regarding the race.

July 24, 2003.

2002 Team Race photo now available!

Check with (photographer) Carol Brown if you would like to purchase a copy. Note: the actual photo looks much better than this compressed jpeg does. Even that blue 4-4-2 shows up very nicely on the shirts (I still think that was such a neat thing you guys did). 8X12 copies are only $4. Please contact Carol before August 13th so she can get the order in for printing.

July 10, 2003.

Well I actually made it out there last night! That makes for two Wednesday nights so far this year - twice that of last year. It was certainly nice to see and talk to so many of you. I didn't know if anyone would still recognize me! This would be in part due to the fact that with one of the meds I'm on (prednisone), I've gained over 45 lbs. But hey, at least I can walk now! Again, it really was good to see everyone. Hopefully, I'll be back soon!

June 16, 2003.

Justa reminder. Because of the CART race this weekend, there will be no bracket racing this Wednesday night (June 18th).

May 7, 2003.

As promised, here is a shot of Jack Hewitt's (way cool) new Corvette and the future Mrs. Masterman points out one hazard of being proposed to in the wet staging lanes. Thanks to Carol Brown for both pics.

May 4, 2003.

A few tidbits from Pete: Jack Hewitt debuted his 2002 Corvette last Wed. night in Super Pro. As soon as we can we will get you some pictures. He started his night with a couple mild passes and had a few tweaks to make but he ran it in eliminations.

Ed Cummins has been coming out working on getting his license, running in Shane Molinari's original Pontiac. Last Wed. night he stepped up and ran in Super Pro and runnered up for his first showing. He took out Iverson in round 1, Ericksen in 2 and Smythe in 3. He lost to Gary Hostetler in the final. Good show Ed.

Also, "in the news", I hear that John Masterman proposed to Johdi a few Wednesday nights ago. Apparently he did the whole on one knee (in the rain even) thing, she said yes and August 30th will be the date!

April 30, 2003.

Due to the rain-out on April 23rd, the first of the Land Of The Leaders ET Challenge series has been rescheduled for May 7th. Any future rain-outs of the Land Of The Leaders program will be rescheduled for the following Wednesday night. Since no rain-out plan was in place, the first one is being moved ahead two weeks to give the participants the opportunity and notice to plan for it.

Although not part of the Bracket/Points program, it should be noted that May 9th is the Benson High School Challenge - er make that The High School Drags. Gates open at 3:00 pm, burnout contest at 6:00, BE THERE! Check the PIR site for more details (and minor release forms) for this years event.

This was the Lincoln High School answer to the 1977 Benson High School Challenge. To the left, just above the (unknown) Impala, you can see the rear of Jay Hockensmith's 68 Camaro. Jay rowed his 4 speed, big block convertible to the win in Bracket 2! Behind him is Tom Juden's 69 big block Mustang, Scott Lamont's Chevelle, my 67 Olds (yes, the same 67) and barely visible on the right is Glen Schreiber's 1966 4-4-2 (which earlier that morning had taken out a parking meter with its quarter panel in front of Lincoln).

The photo was taken on the backstretch of the race course which used to serve as the entry road for drag race participants.

Trivia question for the day. What school was the overall winner of the 1977 event?

April 19, 2003.

Well, I have some sad news to report. Trudy Methke, who along with her daughter Rachael, does the time slips/sound has passed away. Trudy died from cancer on April 10, 2003. At this time, I'm sorry but I don't have too much further information to pass along. A memorial is in the works. I'll post more as soon as I know……… In the meantime, cards and letters can be sent to: Rachael Methke at PO Box 871504 Vancouver WA 98687.

March 21, 2003.

Justa reminder, NO racing this Sunday (March 23rd). Bracket Racing will resume next Sunday (30th) for the last Sunday 1/4 mile race of the points season.

March 17, 2003.

The rain held off long enough for the first (points) race of the year to be completed. See the Results section for the uh, results. As with last year, I will be submitting the results to National Dragster. Look for the results there as well…

March 14, 2003.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY! Season opening, points beginning (exc. Jr's.), first day of bracket racing for the 2003 season! BE THERE! Gates open at 9:00 am, racing at 12:30. Weather permitting of course. Call 503-823-7223 if the weather looks questionable.

February 20, 2003.

2003 ET Bracket and Jr. Dragster schedule posted. Although not listed on the schedule are a couple of Test & Tune days: Sunday March 2nd (gates open 9:00 am) and Friday March 7th (gates open 4 pm) Both days are 1/4 mile and mufflers are of course required. Both days are weather permitting. Also posted is information regarding the Land Of The Leaders E.T. Challenge. I haven't received any racer updates in a few weeks. Let us know your plans for 2003…..

February 15, 2003.

Couple o' page updates. The 2003 points information is posted in the General Info section as well as in the Points Standings section. Please take a moment to read. If you have any questions, please ask them now. Look for the 2003 Bracket Racing / Jr. Dragster schedule to be posted within the next few days. And lastly, thanks to Jeffrey Zurschmeide from The Oregon Region SCCA, I've added a few new pics to the Sports Car section of the History secton.

January 28, 2003.

The latest New For 2003 PIR racer update comes from Pat Figini. His "Instant Trouble" 1969 Mustang is currently at the body shop getting all the nicks and dings removed along with some rust repair. Then next week it's off to the paint shop where it will get a fresh spray of blue. Pat has also been tweaking his '74 Maverick for some playtime at the Friday night races.

January 21, 2003.

The Tabor family plans for the 2003 season include Adam now driving Tom Loose's A+ Bail Bonds sponsored Chevy II in High School bracket. ET's expected to be in the 7.50 range. Andy will go back to running his trusty Blazer in Sportsman. And will be working for Pete a little more this season on the Late Night stuff.

January 19, 2003.

First of the 2003 racer updates comes from Nick Guild. Nick reports he will be moving from High School to Sportsman bracket but he won't be doing so with his old 11.5 second T-Bird. A new SBC powered 1971 Vega GT is in the works. Pictures soon… So what is in your plans for this winter?

January 11, 2003.

PIR racer updates time! Lemme know what your plans for the 2003 season include and I'll post 'em here!
